Replacing BMW316i rear diff, can I do it?
Basically my rear diff is whining like a good ‘un.
I’ve changed the oil in the diff but it hasn’t made any differece to the noise. I’m taking it that the diff is now shot!
My question is, replacing the diff, can I do it myself or do I need to send it to the dealer? How big a job is it? Do I need special tools?
I’m pretty good with tools (aircraft engineer) but no point starting, if I need special tools or equipment.

Jean D, the reason I am asking is. if it costs me £400 to get the job done in the garage or I have to buy a special tool costing £500 that i’ll use once, I may as well give it to the garage to fix.

You can rebuilt a diff yourself but to get it right is a time consuming job of putting it together and taking it apart to get the right amount of free play, the one thing you have to have is “Engineers Blue” its the only way of being sure that the crown wheel and pinion are meshing together properly.
I did a Ford diff and a Hillman Imp trans axle many years ago but I wouldn’t have the patience to do it today.
