I just want real unpretentious connection with people but somehow I don’t think that’s possible.
Yes. First of all, don’t assume all socialization has to be superficial and pretentious. You have some say in that and can avoid people of that description in favor of people more like yourself.
Also, you really need to move away from the hostility thing. Nothing puts people off worse than a hostile temperament. Instead of taking such a negative and defensive position, why not turn it around and attempt a positive and proactive approach?
Give the people you encounter in any social situation the chance to prove or disprove your theory. Treat them as individuals instead of lumping everyone into the same category and essentially writing off the world at large.
Listen, if you keep assuming the worst in people you’re just going to create a self-fulfilling prophecy by alienating them and you’ll wind up alone and miserable. Take a different attitude and give people a chance and I think you’ll soon find out that not everyone is superficial and full of pretension.
You’ve not alone in feeling uncomfortable in social situations. Feeling that way is a lot more common than you think. The only difference is that you appear to be giving up without really trying while the rest of us take a chance at finding kindred spirits, lifelong friends, even romantic partners.
Seriously, take a different tack and see what happens. What have you got to lose?
