Best way to polish antique silver plare. Is Jewlers rouge and buffing wheel a goo0d idea ?
have several antique pieces of silver plate date to 1859 and were my great grandmother’s wedding gift from the groom’s family they are used for display only but have gotten quite tarnished recently. I wondered if polishing them with a buffing wheel and jewelers rouge would be the best way to clean them up and polish them?i
First, be sure the piece’s value doesn’t depend on a patina – that thing they always talk about on PBS’s Antiques Roadshow.
The link below is for a recipe I have used with excellent results on my silver. Especiially useful for those pieces with nooks and crannies, as your arm will not wear off with all the rubbing!
Try it on a piece of silver and see how it works, then move on to the big stuff. So easy, and all I have to do is buff the piece a bit with a nice cloth after (I have hard water and it likes to leave marks).
