Operating the brakes causes the pads to increase the friction load on the wheel discs and slow them down – they wear down and need frequent replacing. Normal operation of the brakes is also reliant on the fact that fuel is cut to the engine, which is further forced to slow by changing the gear ratio dwon. Befort he advent oanti-lock brakes, slamming on the brakes could caus the wheels to lock, causing the car to skid and resulting in loss of contol.
