Here are some great find on ebay for Drill Bit Balling
What type of drill bit is needed to drill through a cue ball to make into a handle for a walking cane?
Most probably the ball will be plastic material.
I would suggest cutting a “V” into 2 pieces of soft wood, then clamp the ball in the vyce with these.
If you are using a drill press, put the drill bit in the chuck, spin it, then pass the ball in the vyce to and fro under the spinning drill, until the drill tip marks the ball at the highest point. Then, stop the machine, and clamp the vyce so this mark is right under the drill bit.
Begin drilling very slowly, allowing the drill bit to start centrally. Do not spin the drill fast! If there is any sign of the plastic melting, use some water to cool the bit and ball, or improve the drill’s cutting edge!
Don’t drill right through, just most of the way. Drill a little, back the drill out, drill a little more, until the required depth.
If you are trying to do this without a drill press, still use the “V” cut wood pieces to hold the ball. It will be more difficult centralising the hole, you will be guessing where centre is. You will need to provide a positive starting point for the drill bit. It is unlikely you will get an accurately centred hole using a hand held machine.
