If you want to be a better softball player, you must know some of the basics in softball hitting. But of course, you can’t play like a pro over night. It would take a considerable amount of practice to master hitting the ball. Why, even the best players of the game still take time to practice so they can really be good at it every game. But what are the basic things to consider if you want to be good in softball hitting?
Your stance, swing, timing and power are some of the key things you have to work on in order to hit the ball with ease. These are very important part in softball hitting. Your timing is as important as your hand-eye coordination. Your timing basically dictates how hard you hit the ball, where you want to hit it, and whether you want to swing and miss it or simply foul it. You may notice a technique some players do in order to get a beat on the pitch. They usually like to tap their front foot. This is a really great technique that you should learn.
Try to look at the motion of the pitcher and time the tapping of your foot with it. Once the pitcher releases the ball, try to focus on the ball and pull your leg back a bit and keep the bat off your shoulders. Your leg and your body should be put into the swing so you can get the power that you want.
Your stance also plays an important role of the power you want. You have to bend your knees. Some players tend to stand with their legs straight. They usually end up hitting ground balls. Your feet should not be together as well; they should be spread and kept apart. In doing so, you can have more leverage if you want to drive the ball really deep. You need to pull the ball if you really want to get the power you want in softball hitting. What is involved in “pulling the ball”? You do this by simply making a strong follow through.
Then there is your swing. You may notice some hitters usually don’t tend to drive the ball. Instead they simply use a short swing. But what can be achieved through a short swing? If you use a short swing, you will be able to have options on where you want to put the ball once you hit it. This is very useful if there is a large gap between the shortstop and the second baseman.
Do you already have the batter’s eye? What exactly is a batter’s eye? This simply means having an eye that is capable of selecting a good pitch to hit. Keep in mind that the strike area is from your knees up to your shoulders, and from the right side of the plate to the left. Once the ball hits those areas, it will be called strike. You have to develop a skill in determining your hit zones and your hit chart. You have to be aware of the pitches you know you can hit well.
