Why does my drill stop at 2 cm depth with 6mm masonry drill bit?
I’m putting up some shelves in the kitchen into the wall that sits between me and my neighbour (semi-detached). Using a masonry bit and hammer drill I can go in about 2 cm and then it won’t go any further, meaning I can’t put my wall plugs in. What have i hit?
Now tried various other locations on same wall. cannot penetrate more than about 2 cm.
Concrete wall, or concrete block ?
You probably hit a re-rod, if in a poured wall.
You may have ot move over or up or down to find a clear spot,
These rods are usually less than 3/4″ in diameter, so a little bit might help.
Edit:
I cannot think of any reason why they would have installed any metal at that location, but take a chance and use a regular drill, not a hammer drill, and use a 5mm regular steel bit, slow speed to see if maybe you can penetrate that wall, in one of the same holes that are already started. Just try to clean out as much concrete as possible first.
If there is metal there, you will probably be able to get through.
Worth a try. Or, if all else fails, try to hammer, by hand, a “star drill” into the hole.
You just might end up using a “Ram Set” a gun using a blank cartridge, .22 cal or larger.
Also, I see some jackass decided to thumbs down the answer, yet has no better solution to offer.
