How to install kitchen cabinet hardware, it sounds simple but can be a little bit complex. Kitchen cabinet hardware is an instant gratification item. What that means is that with just a few simple steps you’ll be able to change out a prominent cabinet feature without all the mess of a full blown kitchen remodel. It will take a little time and research to get it right but it sure beats paying out tens of thousands of dollars for a full set of cabinets.
The first thing to look for is what type of new hardware you want to install. You’ll want to get an idea of what looks good in the kitchen by first buying a couple test pieces. You can then use a bit of tape to stick them up to the cabinets. Experiment with different sizes and cabinet locations to get a feel for the overall kitchen theme. Once you’ve found the perfect cabinet hardware then you can plan the purchase from a local store. You might need to place a special order if they don’t have everything in stock.
After making the purchase you’ll have a big bag of door knobs.
Chances are the old hardware was in the right spot for the shape and size of the cabinets. If so you can reuse most of the holes drilled in the kitchen cabinet door faces.
You’ll need a hand drill with a small drill bit ¼ of an inch or smaller to drill the pilot holes into the cabinet face. To make sure the handle sits exactly where you want it to tape it in place with a piece of cellophane tape over it. Use a pen to mark up where you need to drill.
To save time go ahead and tape up all the handles and mark all the hole locations at once.
You can then pop the handles back off the door and drill all your pilot holes at once. This can shave hours off the install time. When you’re drilling you’re looking to only go about ½ way through the door. You don’t want to punch the hole all the way through the door facing.
When you’re drilling use a slow speed to maintain control and prevent any splintering. You can use a center punch to put a small dent in the door. This can help the drill bit from walking across the cabinet face and marring it.
Now grab your screw driver and attach all the door handles to the cabinets. You don’t need to muscle the screw in just snug them up tight. Too tight and you risk stripping out the screws and having to start over.
Hopefully now you’re really happy and your cabinets look like new. By learning how to install kitchen cabinet hardware you can shave a lot of money off of any restoration project plus have the satisfaction of doing the job yourself. You’ll be amazed at how easy the job really is. So why not get started?
