Are you wondering which golf putting drills are the best for improving your putting and lowering your scores? After all, you can read that almost all of the professional golfers spend the majority of their practice time on the putting green perfecting their putting technique through the most effective putting drills.
So you want to know what these “best” drills are so that you can not only putt better to lower your scores and a lower handicap, but also to putt better so you can have more fun on the golf course and quit embarrassing yourself on the green.Â
I used to absolutely suck at putting. I could kill the ball off the tee and hit a high percentage of the greens in regulation, but when I got up to the green, I always choked and 3-putted the majority of the time. So I was about to either quit golf altogether because I couldn’t enjoy it due to my terrible putting or fix my putting yips. After lots of trial and error, I actually learned some very valuable things that helped me to 1-putt and 2-putt pretty much every hole I play now.Â
Here are 2 golf putting drills that helped my game tremendously and I’m sure they can help yours:
1. On your longer putts (greater than 15-20 feet) your goal should be to get the ball as close to the hole without going past. This will ensure that you 2 putt almost every hole in the round at least (with some surprise home runs in there!)…
I know its your natural instinct to go for the hole no matter how far away you are, but when you end up blowing the ball past the hole, you have to putt on a new series of breaks and grain speed. If you follow this rule of putting the ball as close to the hole (leaving it a bit short) then you’ll most likely be left with a tap-in rather than a 3-footer with a new break. Try it!
2. This drill can work for any length putt and will help you develop a successful and consistent putting stroke. Set up 2 tees on each side of the ball, perpendicular to your stance, just wide enough so the head of your putter can go through them without touching (kind of like a gate). Now putt the ball without hitting the tees. If you hit the tees then that means your stroke was offline and would result in a bad putt.Â
However, these two tips alone won’t make you a pro golfer. I was lucky enough to run across these golf putting drills that are both simple and effective, developed by a pro golfer, that will help you establish a flawless putting stroke fast.
