What’s the difference between drop-forged carbon steel and high carbon steel?
I was looking at hammers and the cheaper hammer was made of drop-forged carbon steel and the more expensive hammer was made of high carbon steel…what’s the difference?
Is drop-forged carbon steel still high carbon steel, just made cheaper?
Well, one is a material, and the other is a method of production. Drop forging is shaping metal by using a heavy weight to force hot metal into a die. High carbon steel, as I am sure you have figured out is steel with a high carbon content. About 0.5% to 1% carbon. High carbon steel is less malleable, but more brittle. In a tool like a hammer, the brittleness is probably at least partially removed by slowly tempering it.
As for the type of steel the drop forged hammer is made of, it is impossible to say.
Edit: Just read the question again, and technically, all steel is carbon steel. Why the manufacturer would bother throwing the word carbon in there, I do not know. Seems like a bit of a sales gimmick.
