Gold literally lies at the very heart of Waihi. Walk along the Pit Rim Walkway and you’ll find the edge of Waihi’s massive open pit Martha Gold Mine, just metres from the town centre. Here you can look down into the workings of the mine hundreds of meters below.
Waihi is a town that revels in its gold mining history which it commemorates every year with the Goldfest Festival held late September. This 7 day celebration of everything gold with fun-filled events for young and old is a popular event on the local calendar.
Throughout the town, you’ll find evidence of Waihi’s goldmining past, from statues of miners, the iconic Cornish Pumphouse and the Waihi Gold Mining Museum to plaques commemorating prospectors John McCombie and Robert Lee who first discovered the quartz reef that would eventually become Martha’s Mine. There’s also the Goldfields Railway where you can take a 6.5 kilometre steam train ride between Waihi and Waikino. And if you want to get up close and personal with a modern day working gold mine, then the Newmont Gold Mine Tours of Marthan Mine are an absolute must do. You may even get to see a gold bar being poured, each bar weighing in around 20 kg and worth close to $1m.
Waihi has real old world charm with its many heritage buildings and lovingly preserved miners’ weatherboard cottages. The Rob Roy Hotel was established in 1896 and was one of several watering holes for early settlers and miners. This historic 2 storey hotel is a great place to enjoy a beverage while soaking in the special atmosphere of this gold mining town. The Old Borough Chambers is now a cafe, wine bar and restaurant and is a local favourite for its tasty food, great coffee and for an enjoyable meal out with family and friends.
Waihi’s award winning Artmarket features work by more than 150 artists, much of which is available in-store or via the online catalogue. Here you can take a piece of history home. Back in the 1800s when mining was all done by hand, kauri milled from the Coromandel was used to prop up the mine shafts. Most of this wood was hundreds, if not thousands of years old. Today Artmarket has salvaged much of this ancient kauri which local wood turners are using to produce beautiful wooden bowls.
Waihi is also surrounded by some spectacular bush clad scenery and lush hills. 12 kilometres to the west of Waihi is the spectacular Karangahake River Gorge. With picuresque tracks through bush overlooking the gorge, Ohinemuri River and old gold mining sites, Karangahake Gorge is a popular recreational area.
The Karangahake Gorge features a complex series of walkways for all levels of fitness. One of the most popular is the Karangahake walkway which attracts thousands of visitors every year. There are many good swimming holes along the river and fishing spots for catching trout plus cafes, the Onhinemuri winery, the Goldfields railway and the Victoria Gold Battery. Ohinemuri Estate and Winery is nestled high above the Karangahake Gorge. With its beautiful old timber buildings and gardens, this is a delightful place to enjoy a glass or two of wine in intimate, relaxed surroundings.
To the south lie the Kaimai Ranges. This forest park features a network of scenic walks, tramps and special locations such as the endangered Kokako Conservation area and the Otawa Scenic Reserve. And to the east is Waihi Beach. This 9 kilometre long white sand beach is popular with families as it’s one of NZ’s safest swimming and surf beach. Despite its popularity, there are long stretches of beach where there is virtually no-one, perfect for beach bums looking for a tranquil spot to relax.
