Do I need impact sockets with my breaker bar?
I recently bought a breaker bar and a 17mm, 19mm, 21mm, and 22mm deep sockets so I can pretty much change any car tire for my car and any friend or coworker who needs a hand. A buddy told me I should only use deep impact sockets with the breaker bar because regular sockets sk and craftsman may break. Do I need impact sockets and will regular ones break while changing a tire?
Impact sockets are best for this, and it isn’t all about inconvenience. Sockets can shatter when they break, and this can and will eventually hurt you. As well, breaking a socket when you are already exerting a heck of a lot of force almost always ends up in damaged knuckles and a boat load of cursing.
You can get away with it in the driveway and the garage, but on a road trip or off road excursion, you don’t want to rely on regular sockets for things like this. It is too easy to break a socket not to have the impact sockets around for jobs like this.
In a perfect world, all lug nuts would only require the application force to remove. Alas, even though my nuts go on at 103 ftlbs with a proper torque wrench every time, they have peaked at more than 300 for removal. Many, many factors can cause this, and even if you do everything right, you are going to end up with a pain in the butt somewhere.
The chance of breaking a socket with a breaker bar is not slim to none, as another answer said, it happens frequently.
It happens so frequently, in fact, that many experienced off pavement travelers will not for one second even consider carrying a regular socket for use on things like lug nuts. It is an impact socket, every time, and that is all.
I realize most people’s vehicle experience occurs in parking lots, driveways, and dealerships, and that is where they get the idea that things work as they should. Craftsman solves everything, Hondas never break, and all the vehicles people have used for decades to travel the world in on expedition are unreliable hunks of junk because JD power and consumer reports say so.
I have news for you all, though. That isn’t the real world. In the real world, we have other tool brands for a reason, and people carry impact sockets for a reason. In the real world, junk yards are chock full of Hondas, and those off pavement classics turn out to be just fine.
Tools break. Craftsman tools break a lot if you are doing real work with them. Some vehicles have easy lugs, true enough, but most will seize at some point or another, and when that happens…
You would give just about anything you own for an impact socket and a larger breaker bar. So, why go without one from the getgo, when you know this will eventually occur?
There was a time when all I could get was Craftsman, and that is fine. Just make sure to go impact or with their pro line where you can for heavier jobs like this, and you will be decent enough.
