Proper running technique is very import when the athlete is being timed, especially in short distances. This could mean a scholarship to college or not. This is the first place an athlete should start when beginning a speed and agility program. One wrong move, standing up too quickly, wrong arm movement, or wasted side movements can add a couple of one hundredths to your 40 or 100. Form and technique need to be part of any speed and agility training program.
First, learning proper form and technique and then applying that at full speed is a key to lowering your 40 and 100 times. When running through all the speed and agility drills utilizing the proper techniques must be a top priority. Once proper technique is learned and applied to speed and agility drills the athlete is accomplishing two goals at once, proper technique, and speed training.
A small problem with running technique is that many times it is not applied in the heat of the battle. When on the field or court, proper technique many times goes out the window. In these instances the athlete that is flat out faster gets to the football, basketball or soccer ball first. Can someone that is fast on the field receive a slow 40 or 100 time? Sure can. A perfect example would be Kevin Ellison from USC, now with the San Diego Chargers. He was a starter games in all 4 years he played at USC, and was considered one of the best Safeties in college. Then he ran a 4.80 40 yard dash at the NFL combine, which is considered slow for a safety. Comments were made about his technique and form, but now he is close to being a starter for the San Diego Chargers in the NFL. He plays much faster than he is timed. The net of this is that technique alone is not good enough to make a player faster on and off the field. Form and technique is important, however, speed and agility training drills are even more important. If an athlete runs a great 40 or 100 but reacts and looks slow on the field, that athlete may not play much during the game.
Players more agile than others but not as fast, may not post good 40 or 100 times, but their shuttle times or 20 yard times should be very good. For some positions the first 10 or 20 yards is more important than 40 yards, especially in the case of basketball players. Where the first step of a 40 yard dash is important, it is most important for a basket ball player, because this first step gets them by the person guarding them. This is why agility drills are very important in a training program.
The last part of a complete guide to running is sometimes the forgotten part or training programs, hip and Core. If an athlete only did core and hip drills, they would get faster. Not huge gains in their speed, but noticeable increases. The core is obviously the body part that connects the upper and lower body parts. It takes part in all running movements, and therefore the stronger and quicker the core, the faster you will move. Lastly the hip muscles are almost always neglected when doing speed and agility programs. The hips play a huge role in Agility movements and some in speed movements. These two body parts should never be ignored and should have a great emphasis in speed and agility programs.
So an athletes speed and agility program should always include, technique, straight ahead speed drills, agility drills and hip and core strengthening.
