Wood turning is becoming a popular addition to the woodworker’s arsenal of skills. However, it can be a puzzle for the beginner as to what is needed to start with the wood lathe and what may already be around the shop. There are just a few basics needed to get started with this wonderful hobby.
Obviously, the first thing one needs is a wood lathe. Unless the budget is unlimited, most turners begin with an entry level tool. Thankfully wood lathes are less complicated and therefore less expensive than are metal lathes. However, there are a few things even the beginner can look for with ease to make the investment go farther.
The lathe should be as heavy as you can afford. This can later be amended by adding sandbags to the stand, a very common practise among woodturners, but a heavy, cast iron lathe is a great thing to have. Wood lathes are sized by the maximum size of the piece of wood they can handle, but few turners will want to use the maximum capacity of most beginner lathes.
One of the reasons is the minimum speed of the lathe will be too fast in most cases for large pieces of wood. Typically the minimum speed of a beginner lathe will be in the six hundred revolution per minute or rpm range. This is all right for a ten inch bowl blank three inches thick, but not for a ten inch diameter log of maple thirty seven inches long and unbalanced. Many beginner lathes will hold that large a piece of wood but are likely not safe to turn it. Look for the lowest minimum speed you can find.
The lathe will most often come with a headstock and tailstock center which are used to hold spindles in place for turning. Most often there is also a faceplate used for holding bowls and such. However, there will not likely be a set of tools for to actually cut the wood. Suppliers will sell tools individually and in sets. For most beginners, a beginner set will do fine. Look for it to have a roughing gouge, a couple of spindle gouges, a couple of scrapers, a parting tool and a couple of skews. Make sure it is made of high speed steel which may be abbreviated as HSS.
Those tools will need to be sharpened but most shops will have a grinder in them already. Pick up an aluminum oxide wheel of eighty to one hundred grit and replace one of the wheels with this new one. A dresser is a necessity. A sharpening jig is not considered a necessity but I would highly recommend buying of making one for the beginner. It will save a lot of aggravation.
All that is left is the wood. For the beginning and for that matter the advanced turner I suggest the wood pile as a great place to look, especially since most woodworking shops already have a bandsaw or other means to prepare the wood for the lathe.
With the basic supplies in hand, all that is needed now is to put those woodturning basics to good use with some practise at the lathe. Just remember to use a face shield or safety glasses and enjoy the craft of wood turning,
