Question about wood sealer and paint?
My 6 year old son has to build a birdhouse from this pre-cut kit for a Cub Scout badge requirement. He will be hand painting the birdhouse instead of using spray paint so I bought this clear wood sealer in the craft section and was wondering if I should seal the wood before the pieces are assembled or after?
Also what type of paint is good to use on a small project like this if he wants to hang the finished birdhouse outside?
Well, being a wood worker, a 12 year cub pack/den leader and the father of two, soon to be three, cubs over the past 12 years I can tell you it really doesn’t matter when you apply the sealer HOWEVER, here is the helpful part..
Before hand is cleaner, less runs and drips from the cracks, especially if he is doing it himself, but you have to be able to let it dry overnight before you touch it to do the one side that holds the piece up.. then let it dry again before asssembling it. The faster way is to put it together first and then seal it and before you do the bottom hang it from an eye screw in the top so you can seal the bottom. this process saves the extra day but can leave more drips and does not get the inside very well.
The type of paint depends upon whether this will see real action outdoors (which you indicated so skip option 1).. Safest is the water based craft paint as it comes out of things.. Next is the acrylic based craft paint it is the medium as it holds up pretty well and comes out with water if you get to it before it dries. Lastly are the model paints/laquers that require thinner to get them out.. These are the most durable and with a with proper prep they have the best finish.. (Until the last year and in scouts we always used acrylics as the thought of laquers on the table, floor , clothes was too much….) If you have extra exterior house paint left over that works well too and the latex cleans with water..
BTW, you could also stain it with exterior stain if you want to skip the sealer and do it all at once..
