Kickboxing / Sparring ~ How can I get on the inside of someone’s extra long reach?
I’m 5’7 pretty athletic and can move with speed, but the problem I have is my partner’s UBER long arm reach! He’s 6ft something and it doesn’t seem to matter what I do, I cant seem to nail this guy! Also, he got me good in the chops today and payback is officially on! Any advice on how to elude his “go go gadget’ arms would be appreciated!
I’m only 5’5; I feel your pain. Here’s my advice to you…
I’m sure you already know that you have to get on the inside. But actually doing that can be difficult sometimes — especially against somebody with such a reach advantage. As challenging as it may prove, it can definitely be done.
If your opponent has good footwork, simply plowing through his attacks to get inside probably won’t work — nor would blitzing him. He would simply fade away at an angle and pepper you with straights or possibly set up a big kick. Your best bet would be to intercept him.
When he comes at you, you’ve got to slip or duck his punches while moving in on him. Again, it isn’t always enough to simply evade the punch; you have to do it WHILE advancing. If you’re successful, the distance between you two will have disappeared. Then you can go to town on him.
Another option, which takes a little bit more finesse, is to work an immediate counter attack into your advance. For instance, you can evade his jab by slipping it WHILE lunging in with a body-jab of your own. Or you can slip his cross while entering with throwing yours, or use the torque of your hips and shoulders generated by the slip to throw a HUGE rear hook to his ribs.
Once you’re in there, I’d recommend laying in to him with a flurry body shots to set up a few big overhands. Just keep going high-low-high-low-high-low.
If he’s got a lot of weight on you, you should probably keep the combination short, then back away at an angle before he can really retaliate. If he’s not too much more powerful than you, I’d suggest that you just stay on the inside and trade with him. He won’t be nearly as effective as you at that range, so you might as well get your moneys worth.
Of course, unless your partner is a human punching bag, he’s probably not going to just sit still. Once you’re on the inside and landing shots, he’ll probably try to get away. As you notice him retreating, that’s the time to throw in a big kick. He’s creating space for you and your punches won’t be able to reach him anymore, but there’s always just enough time to get in a good kick.
