Why do I get so many thumbs down when I say that a combination of the metric system and the English standard ?
should continue to be used in the United States. I mean, don’t they both have their own strengths and weaknesses and plus, it sounds freggin’ retarded for a person to say “Yeah, I’m driving 50 km per hour right now”, it just doesn’t sound right in the American accent
I say we keep both, metric for more scientific type purposes and English standard for more everyday type uses
I agree with you, and I’m really comfortable with the metric system.
Personally, I use the Roman pace and the cubit in my everyday work on the farm. The Roman pace is about five feet, and a thousand of them (mille passus) is the basis of the English mile. To count Roman paces, you count only the left or the right foot as you walk, not both. The cubit is the distance between the elbow and the end of the middle finger. It’s about 18 inches on me. The foot, the pace and the cubit have the tremendous advantage that I cannot misplace them. When I need to measure things, they are handy.
Oh, and speaking of handy, the hand (four inches) is handy for measuring the horses, although I prefer to use a weight-and-height tape. A hand is roughly 10 cm.
The major advantage of the metric system has been as an international standard. Before it became common, there were standards in every country, all different. “A mile? Do you mean a German mile, a French mile, an Italian mile, an English mile, or a Danish mile? Which one?” The American gallon and the Imperial (British) gallon are quite different. Canada gave up Imperial measurements and is now metric.
Culturally, there are thousands of expressions in the English language relating to the “old” system. “Give ‘em an inch…” “Ten foot pole.” You know them all.
As for terminology, the “metric” system is called “SI” in the rest of the world, “Systeme Internationale”. French. It has its own national aberrations, though. Is one allowed to use cm and g, or only m and kg? Various authorities have differing answers.
Watch out for those metricators. Give ‘em a cm and they’ll take a km, I say.
