Beryllium Copper is also known by a few other names: BeCu, Copper Beryllium or Beryllium Bronze, it is a metal alloy of 0.5 – 3% Beryllium and copper, it sometimes has other alloying elements and has amazing operating and metalworking performance qualities.
Properties
It is a weldable, machinable and ductile alloy, it is also fully resistant to non-oxidizing acids like (Carbonic Acid or Hydrochloric acid) to abrasive ear, plastic decompression products and galling. In addition its durability, strength and electrical conductivity can be improved upon and increased by heat treating it. This particular material attains the highest strength out of all the copper based alloys.
However there are a few safety concerns for handling it dues to its compounds being toxic. It present s no health hazards as finished parts or in a solid state, however the dust it gives off which is caused by machining of the material can seriously damage lungs, its compounds are known human carcinogens resulting in a safer copper alloy like Cu-Ni-Sn Bronze often being used as a replacement.
Uses
Beryllium Copper is a non-ferrous alloy that is used in load cells, spring wire, springs and other objects that must retain their shape, because it is a very conductive material and it is non-sparking it is often used in low current electrical connectors and batteries.
Being nonmagnetic it is ideal for making tools, these tools differ from regular tools as they are safe to use in environments containing explosive gases and vapors like an oil rig for example. Screwdrivers, Cold Chisels, Hammers and Spanners are an example of some of the tools manufactured from this material.
