If you, like so many other homeowners, are building a new home or remodeling a current home, you are constantly on the lookout for building materials. Not content with the ordinary, you want something that looks stunning yet is fully functional. You also want something that is built to last. A soapstone counter, along with soapstone sinks, meet all of these requirements with ease.
Brazilian soapstone is sought after by interior designers and craftspeople because it is infinitely versatile in a number of interior design applications, and is breathtakingly attractive. The base color of soapstone, a mineral composed primarily of talc and magnesium, ranges from pearl grey to blue and green, and as dark as charcoal and black. Soapstone is a veined stone, a bit like marble in appearance. Veining can be seen in the green and white striations apparent in and unique to each piece of stone.
Another interesting aspect of soapstone is that it can change color when oil is applied to its surface. In general, oils tend to darken the base color of the soapstone countertop. When oil is applied, it can also change the base color and veining to a more verdigris shading, adding an attractive element of depth and complexity to the already beautiful stone.
With this much variety, interior designers have a heyday when it comes to a soapstone countertop. You can select a soapstone counter that will work with the color of your cabinetry or appliances, whether they range to the light or dark sides of the color spectrum. The darker colors of soapstone countertop also have the added benefit of not showing staining, a decided advantage when you will be using the soapstone counter in a heavy-traffic room such as the kitchen or bath.
Soapstone sinks are lovely when used in conjunction with a countertop of the same material. Sinks can be fabricated from blocks of the stone or slabs. Because this stone is relatively soft, it has been used for centuries as a medium for carving, and can thus be formed into a custom shape for you. A special adhesive is used to create a sink out of slabs that is as durable as it is beautiful.
A soapstone countertop, along with a complimentary sink made of this remarkable stone, will bring beauty to your interior design, yet will also stand up to the rigors of daily use.
