People with hammer toes suffer from pain and have difficulty wearing certain styles of shoes. Although the condition may be the result of arthritis or other diseases, the most common cause is poorly fitting shoes that force the toe into a bent position. Eventually, the deformity can become permanent, but there are treatments.
Once the patient is wearing shoes that do not contribute to the problem, toe exercises are usually suggested. The purpose of the exercises is to stretch and strengthen the toe muscles. You can do this by using them to pick up small items or using the toes to crumple a towel.
Special straighteners are also available from some footwear specialists. These help to pull the toe straight, which can resolve the deformity. If caught early, surgery is usually unnecessary.
Although the problem is more common in older people, it can occur at any age. High arches sometimes contribute to the problem by pulling on the top tendon, which pulls back on the toe.
People with hammer toes that also have high arches should consider insoles to provide additional support. It is also important to purchase shoes that are well-designed, not merely for fashion, but for practicality.
If you want to keep your favorite shoes, you could use a stretcher to accommodate the joint change and to prevent additional pressure that can worsen the deformity. As long as the toe box is long enough and deep enough to prevent bending the toe, stretching the shoes should work.
A similar condition is called mallet toe. The difference has to do with which joint is affected. If the swelling or deformity affects the joint furthest away from the main part of the foot, nearest to the end of the toe, then it is mallet toe.
In people with hammer toes, the upper joint is not affected. The deformity occurs in the second third or fourth toe at the point of the proximal interphalangeal joint. That’s the one closes to the main part of the foot.
In either condition, the end of the toe points down towards the floor. Blisters and eventually calluses may form on the end of the toe, as a result of the awkward position.
Another similar condition is the bunion. People with hammer toes often have bunions, too. They affect the joint of the big toe. They too are caused by wearing shoes that are too tight or poorly designed.
Women’s dress shoes, particularly high heels, cause many foot-related health problems. Problems with the feet eventually affect the knees, hips and lower back. So, lower body health is more important than some people think.
It may not seem like fun to wear orthopedic or practical shoes, but you can always reserve the flashier styles for special occasions. Just be sure to wear them for short periods of time and always bring a pair of more comfortable shoes to slip into.
Corn pads can be used by people with hammer toes to reduce pain and pressure, while they are working to correct the problem. There are lots of solutions out there. Be sure to take advantage of them. No one wants orthopedic surgery.
