Cold air intake – filter fell off – possible damage to the engine?
I have a foam cone style cold air intake on my BMW. I went to clean it today and the clamp had come loose and the intake was just sitting in the compartment. I have no idea how long it was like that.
The car has been running fine, good gas mileage, good acceleration etc although a little wheezy when I really get on it. I cleaned the air filter today and it was pretty dirty so I have to assume it was on there for some period of time before it came loose.
So my question is this:
1. did I damage the engine?
2. is the damage reversible?
3. Is there a way to find out?

unless you were driving in an extremely windy dusty/sandy environment you have no more than microscopic damage, change your oil and you should be fine, it doesnt really matter what damage was done unless you want to rebuild/replace the engine, but i doubt there was any real damage or you would notice, it would take years of driving with no filter in normal conditions to cause real damage. the problem you describe could be attributed to many causes.
