How is a drill bit a screw?
I’ve been finding all the simple machines in a drill and I think the drill bit is a screw. I don’t know why it’s a screw, but I saw it online. I thought screws held things together?
Here’s the definition for a screw:
a simple machine that is a spiral inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder. It holds things together..
That’s a good definition IF you leave off the second sentence. “Screw” is the shape, not the function, although in everyday use we do use it to mean that shape of fastener.
A drill bit is definitely a screw by the shape definition, although “spade” bits are shaped more like an arrow-head on a plain shaft.
The spirals on a drill bit dig into the material you are drilling, taking the bit deeper and deeper, and leaving a hole when it is removed. In the fastener type of screw, the “digging” is into two or more layers of material, and the screw is left in, thereby holding the layers together. Drill bits are usually the same diameter all the way up. Fastening screws are usually cone shaped, so the point makes a path for the rest of it, while the wider areas closer to the head “dig” or cut in to a larger area of the material to be held together.
Other famous “screws” are water pumps, first described by the Greek mathematician Archimedes around 300 AD (although similar items were in use in earlier times). These consist of a wide large screw inside a cylinder. As it turns, water is trapped between the spiral plane and the walls of the cylinder, carrying the water upwards.
Some plants have screw-shaped seed pods. The shape both helps the pods glide to the ground, and to dig in a little on landing, so they are not blown away.
