Does anyone have tips on fitting a replacement wooden spade handle?
Getting the broken bits out is difficult and getting the new one in, in a tight fit without it getting wedged fast, half way in is something I want to avoid.
Getting the broken bits out is a lot easier if they are dry,and they wont be.Keep the spade somewhere very warm and dry for as long as possible.The wood will dry out and shrink,making it loose.The same goes for fitting.The new handle should be dry as a bone.Judicious use of a rasp or similar will help to size it to fit.When fitted and pinned,submerge the handle upside down in a water but for two weeks or so.this will expand the shaft to a very tight fit.The same treatment should be done every month or so for a couple of days.Or if your rich,suspend the thing in linseed oil.That way it’ll probably outlast you.
