can hitch weight on a trailer be measured by setting the trailer jack on a scale?
my hitch weight shouldnt be much more then 200 pounds so a household scale i have that goes up to 350 would be able to register it but is the measurement still valid if its being measured from the foot of the trailer jack rather then at the hitch and at the level it would be at when attached to tow vehicle?
This method will work, won’t be PERFECT, but will be close enough.
Be careful, do not load your trailer to keep weight off the tounge. If you put more weight on the back end, it will lighten to tougne weight, but you will also get yourself in an accident. As you tow, it will not put weight DOWN on the back of the towing vehicle, it will bounce and want to pull UP on it. Heres what will happen.
You will be driving and you’ll notice a little bump that bounces the trailer, something very small can do it. The trailer will shift and try to lift UP on the back end of the vehicle, and as it does, will take traction away from the back tires. Your truck will start to sway just a little, and you will look back at the trailer to check on it. It will be swaying to, only by now the sawy is getting real bad in the truck and its scares you. You freak about whats going on, you hit the brakes and it all over. You will jack-kinfe, maybe flip the trailer AND the vehicle too.
