Carbide (tungsten carbide) tipped bits are manufactured of an extremely hard material that remains sharp for a longer period of time than steel bits, and are heat resistant. A steel v-groove bit is great when you only use it in your router occasionally, but carbide generally lasts about 20 times longer than high speed steel (HSS.)
