What is the difference in single-use battery life between a 9-volt alkaline and a 9-volt rechargeable?
I think mAh rating determines how long a charge will last with rechargeables, and 9-volt rechargeables all seem to have very low mAh ratings, compared with AA, AAA, etc. Is that due to the differences between 9-volt and other battery types, or is there something else going on? I have a piece of equipment that drains an alkaline 9-volt in one day, and I wanted to use rechargeables to reduce costs & environmental impacts, but need to be sure that they will last at least as long…
A rechargeable battery will give you slightly less life than the conventional, but with the materials the rechargeables are made of, you will get longer use out of them.
There’s Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cad). NiMH will give you a longer life per use nut Ni-Cad will recharge quicker.
The standard alkaline that regular batteries are made of are volatile to temperature and impact, but the rechargeable materials are more stable and a much better solution.
The other option is Lithium Ion or just plain “lithium” batteries. This will be the longest usage for a conventional battery but will still not give as much over time as a rechargeable. Lithuims are recommended for smoke detectors and other sensitive equipment.
mAh stands for the measurement of one-thousandth of an amp hour of power. Basically whatever you have to power has an amperage rating. A rating of 1000 mAh will give you 1 amp for 1 hour. Amp-hours are amps times hours, not amps divided by hours.
