can a 3.7 volt 800milliamp battery be charged by a 5 volt 10millamp generator while connected to a 3volt motor
trying to charge a 3.7 volt battery with a 5 – 8 volt , 10 -100 milliamp generator. while the battery is connected to a 3 volt toy motor that is turning the generator. i have the componets for the the job diodes, capacitors, etc. and i get a smooth 5 v – 8v to the battery but the battery always wins. is this a case of a high disharge battery vs. a slow charge generator,enough volts but not enough milliamps to have a continous running motor.
Sounds like you’re trying to charge a digital camera battery there. First, at 10mA, you could pretty well leave the thing connected indefinitely as a trickle charger for an 800mA pack.
Without seeing your circuit, I’d guess your problem is one of internal resistance of the battery vs. that of the power generation side. If you can’t generate a higher potential on the battery leads than already exists at the battery, you aren’t able to produce enough current to create a ‘float voltage’ at the battery. The pack’s internal resistance is low enough that it looks like a “dead short” to your generator circuit.
Just a suggestion — a simple DC/DC converter isn’t that hard to build, and will be more efficient than the motor/generator approach.
National Semiconductor has a great section that shows how to build this sort of thing. You plug in your input (3V) and output (3.7V) and currents. For some parts, they even create the schematic for you! Go to www.national.com and check the WEBENCH TOOLS bar at the top — and select “Power”. Registration is free, and they don’t peddle your email address.
Assuming you have between 2.5V and 3.0V input, and want 10mA output, National recommends the LM3310 regulator (90% efficient — much better than your motor/generator would have been). It’s a bit of overkill (it’ll handle 2A), though. You’ll need a fair number of passive components and you’ll have to sort out the coil, but you’ll get that 90%.

Easier to build, but a bit less efficient, would be a simple circuit with an LM2705-ADJ. Good for up to 150mA, which is more than you want for a trickle charge on an 800mA pack anyway. See it at the link below.

To Tinker, below… the OP gives all indications of having a separate means for powering the “toy motor” — read again, as it does not appear to be any sort of an attempt at a circularly powered “perpetual motion machine” … just a very peculiar way of going about charging a 3.7V battery.
His design, while peculiar in that it suffers from rather poor efficiency, is running into problems with the ISR of the battery itself. The only thing missing in his “education” is an understanding of a proper electronic model for a battery — something not at all unusual.
