Is two 6 volt batteries in a series better than using one 12 volt?
I’m going to be running lights and a 19inch TV in a romote cabin and I would rather not have to run a noisy generator all the time. I know I need a deep cycle battery, but not about two 6 volts or one 12 volt, or if even one 12 volt would be enough for what I want to do. Does anyone have a set up that does this ?

From a power standpoint, two 6 volt batteries in series are the same as one 12 volt battery, assuming all the batteries are the same chemistry (you are probably buying all seal lead acid). Since all your operation and charging will be done at 12 volts, handling of one 12 volt battery is simpler. Also, one 12 volt battery is slightly less expensive than two 6 volt batteries. So, I would recommend standardizing on just 12 volt batteries.
In all cases, I assume you are running 12 volt devices or have an inverter that converts 12 volts to 120 volts. So, I will not discuss that here.
If you want to run ALL your lights and a large 19″ TV from a battery, energy consumption becomes very important. Suppose you purchase a large capacity 12 Volt 225 Ah marine battery like this http://www.batterymart.com/p-12v-225ah-sealed-lead-acid-gel-battery.html . A 19″ CRT TV typically consumes 80 watts to 180 watts (check your TV for exact power consumption because there is large manufacturer/model variation). Assuming a TV consumption of 100 watts, your fully discharged battery will only last 225/100 = 2.25 hours (maximum…but in reality, you should plan to only get 80% of this from the battery). Similarly if you run a 100 watt light bulb and NOT the TV, it will last only 2.25 hours (100 watts is the same consumption, whether from a TV or a light bulb).
It will be early to bed every night and no late night Jay Leno or book reading before the battery is completely discharged! LOL
To make your minimalist existence more bearable, here are some options -
1) Buy an ***LCD*** TV like this http://shopper.cnet.com/flat-panel-and-plasma/coby-tf-tv1901-19/4014-6482_9-32465537.html?info=specs#more-info . This 19″ LCD TV consumes only 35 watts. Your running time of 2.25 hours at 100 watts is now increased to 6.4 hours.
2) Even better is to buy a smaller sized LCD TV since power consumption is much lower.
3) Instead of running conventional 120 volt lights, use LED lights like this http://www.sailorsams.com/mall/nova-9777-led-light.asp which consumes 1 watt. Using LEDs will bring power consumption down to negligable levels.
4) If you don’t mind tinkering, use low voltage lights like this http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=133256-251-CL507&lpage=none and replace the halogen bulbs with LED bulbs like this http://www.lightingfx.com/cgi-bin/cp-app.cgi?pg=prod&ref=LED12V1W11 and add a switch. Run this directly to your battery and you have a cheap 1.5 watt solution. (I do this…the LED light, though, is much whiter than standard halogen or incandescent)
5) Buy more marine batteries and hook them in parallel to get more capacity.
Your net battery capacity and power consumption will determine how often you need to run your generator. If your battery capacity is 225Ah and you use 100 watts for 2 hours every day, you will need to run your generator daily (but, it can be in the daytime).
P.S. Don’t forget to keep a few battery or hand crank dynamo flashlights on hand when your batteries give out. Put glow in the dark stickers on them so you can find them. LOL
