How to fix up a piece of furniture made of laminate, metal and wood?
Someone gave us a architect’s drafting table. It looks pretty cool except it’s beat up, especially the top. It’s got dings, places where the laminate is torn away (around the edges of the top), ink and tape marks that don’t wash off. The top looks like some kind of laminate over particle board or plywood, parts of it are metal, the bottom part of it looks to be some kind of wood. How would I go about painting or refinishing it?
You can laminate over old laminate. If it has metal edges, you nee to remove those and have someone fabricate you a new edge after redoing the laminate top.
To laminate over old laminate:
Sand everything thouroughly with 120 grit paper. Fill all holes with a non shrinking wood putty. Sand that smooth so that you can’t feel the joint with you eyes closed. Use contact cement on the old surface and the bottom of the new laminate. let it dry until it is tacky to the touch, and not making strings when you touch it. Trim with a good router or laminate trimmer. Spend the money on the better blade. (Oldham or freud)
