How many teeth do I need on a wheel to get a 50:1 reduction with a worm drive?
I have an ingoing DC motor shaft that rotates at 3000 rpm, and I want to gear it down with a worm drive to 60 rpm. That’s a 50:1 reduction. If I have a 2 start worm, do I need a 100 teeth wheel? Doesn’t this mean the worm will be really short and the cog very large? How can I make everything fit?
N1*T1 =N2*T2
3000*T1=60*T2
T2/T1=3000/60
T2/T1=50
T2=50*TI
T2=50*2
T2=100
So, as per calculation you are right.
But, you have not mentioned type of load and total torque it has to withstand , you should consider on your own and select the worm wheel.
Since the ratio is not to large you can go for single stage gear unit.
5:1 to 75:1 is the range that can be achieved with worm reducer only.
It is a matter of design and you have to consider many factors as mentioned in the link provided by the other answerer and application and place of use .[ I mean a new system or improvement]
Edit: In 2 start worm , you will get double angular rotation of worm wheel than you are getting with 1 start.
